I suspect that this is the same person as his biography refers to his previous work in a family business in the real estate industry.

Why am I not surprised? So glad I have common sense and didn't sign that contract.

"Get advice on getting an agent

Book

There are a million authors looking for agents, and few of them are going to land a contract with one. Don't let that be you. In a 30-minute phone call, Objective Entertainment founder and e-publishing executive Jarred Weisfeld will share strategies for: finding an agent, getting their attention, and landing a contract to represent your book."

"WHO ARE THE PEOPLE NIGHT SHADE BOOKS IS SELLING TO?

As a humble blogger, I find the information I have gotten a bit disturbing. This doesn't actually look like someone that would be desirable to work with, and I'm a bit amazed if this is the best Night Shade Books could do for its authors."

Weisfeld called 'scum sucking,' by Village Voice:
"Dirty White Boy is the brainchild of Jarred Weisfeld. As an intern at VH1, he somehow pitched a reality TV show focussed on Ol’ Dirty’s post-parole life, and then finagled that situation into becoming a sort of manager to the rapper during his final days. (It’s an opportunistic rise that saw the Village Voice characterize Weisfeld as the “scum-sucking final ODB manager.”) This set-up doesn’t inspire much confidence that the movie will portray ODB respectfully."

It's time for all the authors who signed the new contract to crack open the champagne. Start is obviously one of the big New York Publishing houses, it has such classy execs. You made the right choice. I'm sure you'll never regret it.

Cheers

4oo authors at a piddly little place like WCP. Oh my! Of course, the Womacks have never turned down a manuscript, not ever, and we know why. How do you spell 'termination fees ($500).' The more authors, the more chance of making a killing. Now let's see:What is 400 times $500.00?

Bradley said...

I checked out the author page and this is what Womack says:
"Please check back often, more authors are published every month at Whiskey Creek Press."
You're darned tootin they are....$500, $500, $500...

Anonymous said...

Don't be surprised if the author page suddenly disappears. The Womack's have enough of a revolution on their hands as it is. ROFL. Man, am I enjoying this. It's a great case of poetic justice.

We anticipated the possibility of this, and made adequate copies.

Yep, and that's why Start injected in that 'term of copyright' clause. They knew just what they were doing. They;re going to make a bundle on termination fees.

I have to go to New York on business at the weekend. I'll check out the publishing address of Start Media. (609 Greenwich St, Fl 6) And get back to you with what I find.

The outrage at the termination fee does not make sense to me... How many publisher will take a book on put a cover together, buy cover art, format the book and put it up on Amazon and then simply let you take the book back anytime you want. Please answer this question.. After three years you dont have to pay the fee,, What is the big deal. Also -- Just dont sign the damn contract.

@ Ministry Values

Anyone who signed that second 'contract' is no longer locked in for 3 years, but for life. And take a look at the 'editing' and 'cover art' the Womacks do, it's totally appalling, and doesn't cost them a dime.

@ anonymous.. I have a manuscript.. Can you give me a book cover, format it for Amazon and upload it for the printer since you think it does not cost a thing. Also enough of the whining criticism about the book covers.. God almighty I have never heard such wailing babies... The book covers are no better or worse than a bunch of others...

Anonymous said...

Personally, I was quite happy with my covers. The editing, however, was minimal to non-existent and when the book came out with glaring formatting errors, I got no response to a request to have it fixed. As for the cost of cover art, formatting, and uploading...that is the cost that a publisher, any publisher takes on. They reap considerably more profit per book than the author does and that is their recompense for the cost of production. They should not depend on a buy back fee to recoup their investment. If they feel the book isn't good enough to sell and make their money back without dependence on a termination fee, they shouldn't offer a contract to publish it in the first place.

So why is a real estate agent buying up failing publishers?

Well then you're easily pleased. The covers at WCP are atrocious, and the text is often illegible. Here are some examples.

It's likely just a mailing addy. They'll be running their publishing empire out of their mother's basement.

Here's the Google Maps street view of that address. There's this one and one in Hempstead, NY, but that one is a gas station. Of course, with this mess, that's a legit possibility too!

I agree that some of those covers are not the greatest, but I was happy with mine. I did ask the artist for changes when I didn't feel the covers reflected my vision... I was lucky to get an artist who was willing to work with me.
